What "No data" means

Where Mosaic's school and roster data comes from, how often it refreshes, and why a gray tile is not a bad sign about a school.

Updated October 2, 2026

Some tiles on your report are gray, and some schools show No data for playability. Both mean the same thing: Mosaic does not have that piece of information for that school yet. The factor is left out of the school's score, and the count next to the score, for example 10 of 12 factors, tells you how much of the score is built on real data.

Where the data comes from

School facts such as enrollment, location, admission rate, net price, and programs offered come from the United States Department of Education's College Scorecard and IPEDS surveys. These update once a year.

Athletic division and conference come from the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA directories.

Rosters come from each school's own athletics website. Mosaic checks every roster page once a day and reads it again only when the page has changed. Some schools publish rosters in a format Mosaic cannot yet read; those show No data for playability until they do.

Campus life details such as dining and housing are the newest part of the data and the least complete. Expect gray tiles there for many schools during the pilot.

What a gray tile tells you

It tells you to ask. A school with a gray tile on dining is not a school with bad dining. It is a school where Mosaic could not find a reliable answer, so it declined to guess. The visit is where you find out.

Seeing the coverage for yourself

The Data page lists every source behind a report — what it is, who publishes it, how many of the schools it covers, and when it was last updated. It is the same board the Mosaic team works from, minus the buttons.

How to get a school's data fixed

Tell your consultant, or use the help link in the app. Roster pages that Mosaic cannot read are the most common gap, and they are usually fixable within a few days.
