Ability tiers
How the 1-100 BestFit player score is built, how it maps to five competitive tiers, and why statistics can lower but never raise it.
Updated October 30, 2026
The BestFit player score is Mosaic's 1-100 estimate of the college baseball level where a player's current verified numbers fit. It is a player score, not the fit score for a school and not a scouting grade.
The three parts
- Baseline: Mosaic translates the verified metrics that matter for the player's position into 1-100 scores, then takes their weighted average. Missing metrics drop out and the available metrics share the weight.
- Travel organization: Class 1 adds 4 points, Class 2 adds 2, and Class 3 or an unranked organization adds 0.
- Statistics check: Last season's game line can subtract 5 points for a command or contact concern. Statistics never add points.
Pitchers use max fastball, sitting fastball and off-speed velocity. Catchers use pop time, exit velocity and arm velocity. Infielders and outfielders use exit velocity, arm velocity and the 60-yard dash. The metric bars show both the number entered and its 1-100 score.
The five competitive tiers
| Tier | Score | Programs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 90-100 | SEC, ACC, Big Ten and the other top programs |
| 2 | 80-89 | Mid-major Division I and elite junior colleges |
| 3 | 70-79 | Low Division I, high Division II and top NAIA |
| 4 | 60-69 | Low Division II, high Division III and standard NAIA |
| 5 | 50-59 | Standard Division III and regional junior colleges |
Each school has its own competitive tier. Mosaic starts with a conference rule, falls back to the division default, and lets an administrator override a school when the program belongs at a different level.
When there are no verified metrics
An unranked or Class 3 player with no verified metrics receives a temporary score of 55. The profile says this plainly. Add current showcase numbers and run the report again to replace the fallback with a measured score.
How statistics are used
Statistics are a reality check, not a second way to earn points. For example, at least one inning with one or more walks per inning flags Command Variance and subtracts 5. At least 30 at-bats with an OPS below .600 flags Contact Variance and subtracts 5. A two-way player can receive both checks. A missing or too-small game sample is ignored.
What the tier does on a report
New reports normally include schools one competitive tier above and below the player's tier. The level match factor then scores how close each school's tier is to the player's own tier. Other fit factors, playability and the Blocked cap work the same way as before.
Administrators can switch back to the original six-tier ability band. That model remains available and keeps its original division-band behavior.
